The
Baptist Faith and Message book published in 1971, written
by Herschel Hobbs, which was revised in 1996 and last
reprinted in 1998 has the following endorsements on
the back cover:
|
"Herschel Hobbs' brilliance,
conviction, and compassion will make him a lasting memory
in the minds of Southern Baptists for all time to come.
As chief architect of "The Baptist Faith and Message,"
he practiced what he preached; a faithful witness to all
and a wonderful friend to many."
--Morris
H. Chapman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Executive
Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention
"No
one in Southern Baptist life has cast a longer shadow
of influence in our times than Herschel H. Hobbs. He is
the architect and spokesman for "The Baptist Faith
and Message" statement and has long been recognized
as the authority in this area. This revision of this wonderful
book is one of his last accomplishments before he went
home to be with the Lord. Praise God for his faithfulness.
These pages will be an invaluable aid in studying this
pivotal document in our Southern Baptist life."

Draper, President,
The Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention

SBC apologist Jerry Sutton explained the alterations saying,
"The 1963 committee was in many ways naive and
they permitted neo-orthodox language to be inserted unbeknownst
to most of them."
"Two
of the four seminary presidents said, 'There was not
a professional theologian among the 1963 BF&M committee.
The closest thing they had to a professional theologian
was Herschel Hobbs, and he was duped.' They maintain
that unnamed neo-orthodox theologians suggested the
language of the 1963 BF&M to the writers."
