Cynthia Clawson Returning to TBC Convocation Cynthia Clawson, winner of a Grammy and five Dove awards, will return for Texas Baptists Committed fourth annual convocation. Clawson is a remarkable singer with a nearly four-octave range and she has been traveling for two decades singing in concerts across the country and around the world. Billboard magazine called her “the most awesome voice in gospel music.” She sang at the TBC Convocation last year and TBC received requests for her to return this year. Clawson has 19 recordings to her credit. She has sung the title song to the Academy Award-winning movie “Trip to Bountiful.” Recently she completed a new acapella project, Prayer and Plainsong, consisting of a CD, video and audio cassette. It was recorded live in the 275 year-old San Jose Mission in San Antonio. This project consists of songs about prayer and meditation. During the TBC Convocation she will sing during the programs and will give a concert on 9:00 p.m. Friday. “Her expressive voice and creative style will be a significant contribution to our convocation’s focus on spiritual formation,” David Currie said. Cynthia is difficult to classify because of her varied styles of music including church hymns, jazz, country, pop and Gregorian chants. She is a favorite among Texas Baptists not only for her exceptional quality of voice, but also for her style of communication using sweeping gestures, hand motions and facial expression. Clawson was born and reared in southwest Texas, the daughter of a Texas Baptist preacher. She is a wife and mother who seeks to be faithful to her calling as a disciple of Christ with a specific ministry in music. June 1997 |
