EXCERPTS FROM JEROLD McBRIDE’S NEWS CONFERENCE |
Jerold McBride, new president of the Baptist General Convention, revealed during his post election news conference that he “walks the walk and talks the talk” of a Texas Baptist.
Here are a few excerpts from the news conference that show he truly understands and is a Texas Baptist.
On his Leadership Style: “Don’t fence me in. I’m a pretty radical pragmatist. What’s important is we get the job done.”
On Autonomy: “The Texas Baptist Convention is not a farm team of the SBC. The SBC doesn’t make Texas Baptists possible. Texas Baptists make the SBC possible.”
On Mission Giving: “I think the vote says the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is not an issue (in Texas). It’s none of my business or my concern how your church chooses to give its missions support. The issue is to get the money there.”
On the SBC controversy: “Don’t mess with Texas. We don’t need that here. We need to move together. We’ve spent enough time being distracted.”
On Cooperation: “I don’t ever want to be considered anything other than a theological conservative. I can work with anybody. I’m open, inclusive. I have no hidden agenda, no vendetta.”
