WHY I SUPPORT THE NEW BAPTIST COVENANT
by Sarah Withers
Chair, Baptist Heritage Council Board

I support The New Baptist Covenant because it bears the marks of the ministry of Jesus. To fulfill our responsibility as Christians, Jesus said, “for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me” (Matt. 25:34–36).

Here we find the foundation upon which The New Baptist Covenant is built. How can we accomplish this mission given by Christ? It is a mammoth undertaking. Outstanding Baptist leaders, namely, Jimmy Carter, Kirby Godsey and Bill Underwood met to determine a plan. They had a vision and brought all kinds of Baptists together to begin the dialogue about how Baptists could speak to peace, justice and poverty issues. We will discuss together such topics as “Breaking Cycles of Poverty,” “Peacemaking,” “Race as a Continuing Challenge,” “Sexual Exploitation”and “Youth at a Crossroad.” All Christians are urged to attend The New Baptist Covenant.

More than 20 thousand congregants, even more than on the Day of Pentecost, will gather in Atlanta. The meeting will draw people from all races, all political persuasions and all types of worship experiences, with a directive to magnify Christ make him known in the world. It will not matter when we enter into the heavenly kingdom whether our skin is white or black, whether we are rich or poor, whether we are Democrat or Republican, but Jesus will expect us to do all we can to feed the poor, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked and visit the sick and prisoners.

Join us and others at the Baptist meeting to help with all of these directives in Atlanta on January 30 – February 1, 2008. Sign up at www.newbaptistcelebration.org.
