SBC APPOINTMENTS REMAIN EXCLUSIVE

Excerpt from editorial by Toby Druin, The Baptist Standard, May 6, 1998, about the recent appointments made to SBC committees.

Those in charge of the SBC brook no opposition and take care of their own; if you doubt it, check out the list of Texas (April 29 Standard) names to serve of SBC committees this summer in Salt Lake City and to be nominated for service on SBC boards and commissions. With a few exceptions they are men --one is a woman-- who are active in the new Southern Baptists of Texas convention, many including the woman, serving on its board of directors. Most are in churches that divert most of the Cooperative Program dollars from the Baptist General Convention of Texas to the SBC. Three are from churches that have not given a cent to the Cooperative Program this year, according to the listing in last week's Standard. Two of these are being nominated for service on the North American Mission Board.

What are the criteria by which they are being nominated? Wouldn't you expect the nominee's church to be giving enough to the Cooperative Program to pay his expenses to the board meetings he is expected to attend?
