SBC Leaders Slander CBF

The SBC Executive Committee is sending a packet to folks who request information regarding the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. It is a packet of misinformation that SBC leaders should be ashamed of themselves for distributing.

We are printing two editorials on the subject. One is by Mike Clingenpeel, editor of the Virginia Religious Herald. The other is by Rick McClatchy, coordinator of CBF of Oklahoma, and a former Texas pastor. Both point out how ridiculous the attitude and actions of the SBC leaders are and set an example of how we as Texas Baptists should NEVER act.

It is amazing how the SBC Sunday School Board can run ads in Jerry Falwell’s Liberty Journal, but many state Baptist papers cannot take an ad promoting the CBF Global Missions Offering.

The SBC now has fundamentalist leadership. That choice was made by the messengers attending the conventions. Texas has non-fundamentalist leadership. That choice also was made by the messengers attending the state conventions. We would all be better off if we simply cooperate when we can and agree to disagree when we differ.

At TBC, it is not our purpose to attack the SBC. It is appropriate, however, to point out when SBC leaders act in non- Baptist ways. It is never appropriate to attack the elected leaders just because we disagree with them. To do so is unethical.
