Ophelia Humphrey: nominee for first vice president

Ophelia Humphrey, a lay woman from First Baptist Church, Amarillo, will be nominated for first vice president at the annual meeting in San Antonio. Humphrey will be nominated by her former pastor, Winfred Moore.

Moore said he will nominate Humphrey “because we need her kind of commitment and quality of leadership.” “I believe she is the kind of Baptist the Baptists of Texas need and want,” said Moore, Visiting Distinguished Professor of Religion at Baylor University.

“Ophelia has been a member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo since 1941. For 30 of those years I was privileged to be her pastor. I watched her work with the church WMU as director and member. She and her late husband, C.J., were involved in everything the church did. Most memorable to me was their involvement in Sunday School where together they led marriage enrichment seminars for many years.

”Humphrey has long been associated with Texas WMU and was state president, 1964-68. She recently completed service on the Texas Baptist Executive Board. She and her husband were involved in many aspects of Texas Baptist mission work.
