Texas Baptists Committed is dedicated to reaching people for Christ through local churches; promoting and defending historic Baptist principles; spreading an understanding of Baptist heritage and distinctives through education; and cooperating with the mission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and its related institutions.

FOLLOWING PAIGE PATTERSON’S ADVICE?

It is interesting to note that what Texas Baptists approved in Amarillo is, in many ways, exactly what Paige Patterson wanted the SBC to do in the past. Patterson wanted the Cooperative Program to be defined in such a manner “to allow us not to support those things we oppose without being called ‘uncooperative.’”

Patterson’s full quote comes from the book The Truth in Crisis, Vol. II, 1987, p. 22. The quote reads: “Patterson said inerrantists should not be expected to continue giving financial support (through the Cooperative Program) for what they do not believe. If the SBC is going to be broad enough to accept a wide diversity of programming, ‘we must devise a way to allow us not to support those things we oppose without being called ‘uncooperative.’’”

Texas Baptists have fulfilled Paige Patterson’s dream in a totally fair manner. We have approved a way for local churches to give to what they support and delete what they do not support and still be called cooperative. And we have done it fairly for those who agree with Paige Patterson, and for those who do not!
