BGCT STAYS MAINSTREAM

The 1993 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE Baptist General Convention of Texas was an exciting time for mainstream, traditional Texas Baptists.

Messengers once again elected officers who had publicly declared their support of the current direction and leadership for the BGCT; who had encouraged Texas Baptists to reject fundamentalist control and who had exhibited a spirit of inclusiveness .

The officers elected at the convention were: president, Jerold McBride, pastor of First Baptist Church, San Angelo; first vice president, Mauriece Johnston, former president of the Texas WMU and member of First Baptist Church, San Antonio; and second vice president, David Becker, pastor of University Heights Baptist Church, Huntsville.

The votes were as follows: McBride defeated Wayne Allen with 67 percent of the vote; Johnston defeated John Hatch with 70 percent of the vote; and Becker received 76 percent compared to Robert Lacey’s 24 percent.

The convention once again rejected attempts to reduce funding to Baylor University and to deny funding to the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., both by huge margins.

The messengers did approve the Institutional Study Report as presented, which states that Texas Baptists “do not own institutions” but rather have a fiduciary relationship with Texas Baptist institutions.

Messengers also approved the Christian Life Commission report, and affirmed the CLC stance on abortion which is slightly different than that of the SBC Christian Life Commission.
